Judge Orders Redactions to Key Video Testimony in Tyler Robinson Preliminary Hearing

Judge Orders Redactions to Key Video Testimony in Tyler Robinson Preliminary Hearing

A week-long preliminary hearing is nearing its end, with a key piece of evidence set to be presented in court on Thursday morning. Video testimony from Lance Twiggs, the former lover of suspected assassin Tyler Robinson, will be played for the court, although with certain redactions. Prosecutors had initially intended to play the video on Wednesday, but after a series of objections from the defense, the judge ordered redactions to be made before it could be played.

The defense had raised concerns about the potential impact of playing the unredacted video, citing constitutional concerns about televising a "confession" before trial. The judge ultimately agreed to redact around 16 minutes of the 37-minute video statement from Twiggs, as suggested by the defense. The full video is expected to show Twiggs discussing various pieces of evidence, including texts, chat logs, and a note that could be considered a "confession" from Robinson.

The Kirk family, including Charlie's widow Erika and his mother Kathy, were emotional in court as they awaited the playing of the video. Erika Kirk was seen wiping away tears and sharing emotional embraces with her mother-in-law, and at one point appeared to urge the family attorney to approach the podium. The family's attorney argued that playing only a redacted version of the video would create "doubt and distrust in the judicial system", and that the evidence should be made public for all to see.

Tyler Robinson, the suspected assassin, appeared visibly uneasy at times during the hearing, particularly when mentions were made of his former lover Lance Twiggs. He was seen taking deep breaths, fidgeting, and adjusting his suit jacket, and at times appeared to be struggling to maintain his composure. The judge has stated that the preliminary hearing will conclude by 5 p.m. on Friday, and that he will consider all the evidence presented when making his probable cause decision.

The case has been highly emotional for all parties involved, with the Kirk family seeking justice for their loved one. As the hearing drew to a close, Erika and Kathy Kirk shared a tearful hug, a poignant moment in a highly charged and emotional case. The playing of the video testimony on Thursday morning is set to be a crucial moment in the hearing, and will likely have a significant impact on the outcome of the case.
