The Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial campaign took a leftward turn on Sunday with the appearance of left-wing commentator Hasan Piker at a rally in Milwaukee.
Rally attendees, largely made up of young supporters, gave Piker a standing ovation as he spoke about the state's rich history of socialism. Piker, known for his promotion of an anti-Israel and communist platform, livestreamed and posted about the rally throughout the day on social media.
Piker's appearance at the South Milwaukee High School gymnasium was seen as a nod to Hong's affiliation with the Democratic Party's left wing. Hong, the current front-runner for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, has leaned into populist messaging about the cost of living throughout her campaign.
Hong's main Democratic opponent, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, has criticized her for associating with Piker. However, Hong defended her decision, saying it was a risk not to try to build the broadest coalition possible.
Piker has long been a prominent figure in Democratic circles, but his recent rise to prominence has been marked by inflammatory statements about Jews and sympathies with anti-Western ideals. His appearance at the rally has sparked controversy, with some questioning the wisdom of campaigning with a figure so divisive.
Despite the controversy, Hong remains the clear front-runner in the Democratic field, with a recent Marquette University Law School poll showing her leading by over 20 percentage points. The winner of the Aug. 11 primary election will face off against Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Tom Tiffany, a member of the House Freedom Caucus.
Hong's path to victory was further cleared this week when competitor Mandela Barnes, the former lieutenant governor of Wisconsin, dropped out of the race and implicitly endorsed Hong. Hong represents Wisconsin's 76th district, which covers some of Madison, and has highlighted her background as a chef and former restaurant owner throughout her campaign.
