On June 18, a three‑year‑old boy fell approximately 15 feet into the crocodile enclosure at Johnson’s of Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdon, Oxfordshire.
The enclosure contained 15 crocodiles at the time. The child was bitten by at least one animal, sustaining a broken arm and pelvis.
The zoo’s owners, together with a zookeeper, entered the enclosure and rescued the boy within minutes. First aid was administered immediately after the rescue.
He is no longer in critical condition but remains hospitalized for several weeks. Five surgeries have already been performed, with two more likely needed to address his arm and wrist function.
The zoo reopened its Tropical House exhibit last week, which houses ancient reptiles including alligators. Signs throughout the facility now warn that children must be supervised while on site.
The council visited the zoo the following day and described the incident as isolated. It will conduct periodic inspections to ensure ongoing safety.
Johnson’s of Old Hurst is home to more than 100 animals and serves as a local attraction for families.
