The U.S. Department of Justice has notified Michigan officials of its plan to deploy election monitors to Detroit, Lansing, and East Lansing for the upcoming primary elections.
In a letter to Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope, Timothy Mellett, deputy chief of the DOJ's Voting Section, outlined the monitoring assignment as part of the department's assessment of federal primary election administration.
The monitors will observe polling places and voting procedures to evaluate compliance with federal election laws, contacting local officials one week before the election to finalize monitoring details.
Election monitors do not handle ballots or administer elections but document procedures and report any potential irregularities to the Department of Justice for review.
