Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized since June 14 following a cardiac arrest. Reports surfaced that McConnell was found unconscious in his Washington, D.C. residence last month.
On Monday, a White House source was cited as saying McConnell is being kept alive by machines and is in organ failure, with reports of him being declared "brain dead" by medical professionals.
Scott Jennings, a former staffer for McConnell, addressed these rumors on Tuesday. He revealed that he had spoken with McConnell earlier that day, noting that their conversation lasted nearly 20 minutes.
"I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning," Jennings said. "He's still recovering in the hospital. We talked about Iran, Ukraine, the unfolding situation in Maine, my visit to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history."
Jennings went on to say that McConnell would be eager to return to work as soon as possible. He also mentioned that they discussed the history of the vice presidency and the modern presidency, as well as the role of the Senate.
Other top Republican senators, including John Thune and John Barrasso, also reported speaking with McConnell, offering further reassurance about his condition.
