Fewer Schools Limit Free Speech, Historic Low Recorded

Campus policies restricting student expression have hit an all-time low, according to a recent study.

The study, released by a prominent organization advocating for individual rights, found that the number of schools with restrictive policies has decreased significantly.

Only 13.2 percent of schools now have a "red light" rating, indicating that their policies seriously threaten protected expression, while just 9.8 percent of public schools earned the designation.

These numbers represent a substantial decline from the original study published in 2006, which found that 68.6 percent of schools had red light ratings.

A growing number of schools have adopted policies explicitly protecting free speech, with a total of 120 administrations and faculty bodies implementing policies similar to the "Report of the Committee on Freedom of Expression" adopted at the University of Chicago in 2015.

The study's author notes that pressure from state legislatures, federal investigations, and shifts in research funding have prompted internal review at many schools, and that this momentum should translate to a commitment to free speech during controversies.

The organization leading the study has been instrumental in fighting for free speech in a culture increasingly hostile to expression.

The progress made on this issue is a result of the efforts of conservative free speech organizations and the leadership of a former president who championed individual rights.

As the culture continues to shift, it is essential to build on these gains and remain committed to the cause of freedom of expression.

The fight for free speech is far from over, but the current momentum is a promising step towards a more open and inclusive environment for students.
