Chelsea Pursue £42m Tottenham Target Amid Danny Ings' Departure

Chelsea Pursue £42m Tottenham Target Amid Danny Ings' Departure

Chelsea have opened talks to sign Italy defender Giorgio Scalvini following the completion of a deal for former England international Danny Welbeck.

The signing of Welbeck from Brighton on Saturday marks the club's fourth summer signing, after Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

Welbeck, a 35-year-old player with experience at Manchester United and Arsenal, has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues' new signings reflect their big-spending approach in the transfer window, with manager Xabi Alonso seeking to strengthen the team ahead of the new season.

According to reports, Chelsea chiefs have immediately turned their attention to Atalanta and Italy defender Scalvini, who has made over 100 appearances for his boyhood club.

Scalvini's form has attracted interest from several European clubs, and it is claimed that Chelsea have directly approached his representatives to discuss a deal.

However, the Blues face competition from London rivals Tottenham and fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, who are also interested in Scalvini.

Atalanta reportedly want at least £42m to sign the Italian centre-back, but Scalvini is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League as he seeks to take the next step in his career.

The arrival of Lacroix from Crystal Palace means Chelsea have TEN central defenders on the books, but Alonso is ready to sell at least five of those to strengthen other areas of the team.

Welbeck, who scored a career-best 13 goals in the Premier League last season, is eager to perform in west London, saying he has 'fire in my belly' to contribute to the team's success.

Chelsea finished just 10th in the Premier League last season, failing to qualify for any European competition, and Alonso has three more friendlies to prepare for the new season, with Chelsea facing Juventus, AC Milan, and Johor Darul Ta'zim before their Premier League opener.
