A massive wildfire has engulfed Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, scorching approximately 247 acres of heathland and threatening nearby communities.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze for more than 12 hours, deploying specialist appliances and tactical advisers while establishing a rest centre that has supported around 50 evacuees.

The fire is located roughly four miles from the Sizewell B nuclear power station, but officials confirm there is currently no risk to the facility.

Local leaders emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating that all necessary resources, including mutual aid from neighboring regions, are being mobilised.

Residents of Westleton village opened their homes to displaced families, providing shelter, meals and a safe space for those forced to leave caravans and holiday parks.

Emergency crews have focused on protecting properties such as Coastguard Cottages, Mount Pleasant Farm and the Cliff House Holiday Park, and have successfully evacuated all occupants.

The region is experiencing a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 30 °C and a forecast of several dry days, though isolated rain showers are possible overnight.

An amber heat‑health alert remains in effect for the East Midlands, the East, the South East and London, as the country grapples with widespread drought conditions.

Across Europe, wildfires continue to devastate areas of France, Spain and Greece, where hundreds of thousands have been evacuated and several firefighters have lost their lives.
