The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12‑10 on Tuesday to advance Todd Blanche’s nomination for Attorney General.
The decisive shift came after Senators John Tillis and John Cornyn withdrew their opposition following a negotiated agreement concerning the disputed weaponization fund.
The full Senate is expected to hold a confirmation vote later this week, which could solidify Blanche’s appointment.
Late Sunday night, Blanche announced the rescission of a $1.8 billion weaponization fund, citing recent discussions with committee members.
He stated that his team had met with Senators over several weeks, addressed outstanding concerns, and issued an order updating the May IRS settlement.
President Trump responded by criticizing Senator Cornyn and suggested he might temporarily withdraw Blanche’s nomination until both Cornyn and Tillis leave office.
Trump described the fund as benefiting “American Patriots” allegedly harmed by the previous administration and called for Blanche’s immediate confirmation.
Senator Cornyn defended his vote, noting that Blanche provided assurances the fund would not be revived and that any future action would require Department of Justice cooperation.
