Historian Returns to Smithsonian After 10 Years, Finds Exhibit

The National Museum of American History on the National Mall has faced criticism for a shift toward activism, with observers noting a focus on mobilizing visitors rather than simply informing them.

One commentator described the experience as markedly different, saying, “From the moment I walked in, it’s a very different experience.” He added that the museum now directs visitors toward action, rather than providing information for independent decision‑making.

He also pointed out factual inaccuracies and omissions, arguing that the most significant issue lies in what is left out of exhibits, calling it “factually incorrect information” and “misleading” for what it omits.

A hearing saw a representative question the museum’s director about an alleged anti‑white agenda and efforts to rewrite American history, raising concerns about the institution’s narrative choices.

A 162‑page report titled “Saving America’s Story” accuses the museum of ideological capture by a radical activist ideology, claiming it erases or minimizes America’s heritage and downplays foundational achievements.

The report, released on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, frames the museum’s narrative as a tool for division rather than shared national pride.

In March 2025, an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” was issued, directing steps to counter what was described as a widespread effort to rewrite U.S. history by casting founding principles in a negative light.

The order specifically singled out the Smithsonian for promoting divisive, race‑centered ideology.
