Ribfest at Sankofa Square this weekend: Summerlicious event

Toronto’s first weekend of July is packed with festivals, food celebrations, and community gatherings that promise a lively atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

The Downtown Toronto Ribfest returns to Sankofa Square on Yonge and Dundas streets. Ribs and other barbecue dishes will be available from noon on Friday until 9 p.m. on Sunday. The event is free, but there will be no live music or beer tent.

Summerlicious, the city’s biannual culinary festival, runs from July 3 to July 19. Over 240 restaurants offer three‑course prix fixe menus at six different price points for lunch or dinner. Reservations can be made in advance.

The Beaches Jazz Festival opens with the Sounds of Leslieville & Riverside event at Jimmie Simpson Park. The weekend features an ’80s Throwback Party at 6 p.m. on Friday, food trucks, vendors, and a full lineup of performers.

Scarborough’s largest street festival, Taste of Lawrence, takes over Lawrence Avenue East. The opening ceremony and parade begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by live entertainment, a beverage garden, midway rides, and family attractions. A new Soccer Hub will host watch parties and game screenings during the FIFA World Cup.

FIFA Fan Fest remains open this weekend, including Saturday when Canada faces Morocco in the Round of 8. The festival operates from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Free general admission tickets will be available at a designated point on Thursday.

The ninth annual Taste of the Middle East festival is held at Nathan Phillips Square. It showcases Arabic music, art, and culture from 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday at 8 p.m.

Public transit authorities will provide enhanced service to accommodate visitors to the FIFA events. No major transit closures are scheduled for the weekend.

Road closures for the FIFA World Cup will begin on Thursday, July 2, from 2 p.m. to midnight. Key routes include Fort York Boulevard, Lake Shore Boulevard West, Dufferin Street, Strachan Avenue, and Fleet Street, with limited local access for nearby residents and businesses.

Lawrence Avenue East will close between Warden Avenue and Birchmount Road from 10 a.m. on Friday, July 3, until 2 a.m. on Monday, July 6, for the Taste of Lawrence Festival and concurrent road and water infrastructure work. Four lanes on Warden Avenue between Lawrence Avenue East and Ellesmere Road will remain open, and two‑way traffic will continue south of Lawrence Avenue East.

The Governor’s Bridge Rehabilitation Project will close the Governor’s Road Bridge over Moore Park Ravine to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. on Monday, July 6, to 10 a.m. on Monday, August 10. One pedestrian sidewalk will remain open during this period.

On Saturday, July 4, Davisville Avenue will close from Pailton Crescent to Yonge Street between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. for a crane hoisting operation.

A long‑term construction plan on the Gardiner Expressway will reduce the westbound lane count from four to three between Park Lawn Road and Grand Avenue in southern Etobicoke. The eastbound lanes along the same stretch will be narrowed but will not lose a lane, effective from April 2025 to December 2026.

With a diverse lineup of cultural, culinary, and sporting events, the weekend offers something for everyone. Planning ahead for traffic, transit, and event schedules will help visitors make the most of Toronto’s vibrant festivities.
