GOP senators back Lindsey Graham's sister

Following the passing of Sen. Lindsey Graham, Republican senators have rallied around his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to temporarily fill her brother's seat in the Senate. Sen. Roger Marshall expressed confidence in Nordone's ability to represent the same values as her brother, stating that she will "do a great job" in the role.

Nordone's appointment was made possible by a South Carolina law that allows the governor to name a temporary replacement for a vacant Senate seat. Governor Henry McMaster, a close ally of President Donald Trump, officially appointed Nordone to serve the remainder of her brother's term, which ends on January 3rd.

President Trump's endorsement of Nordone was a significant factor in her appointment, with Sen. Kevin Cramer stating that the move was "perfect." Sen. John Hoeven also praised Nordone, noting that her relationship with her brother was incredibly close and that she had always been a source of support for him.

Nordone's appointment has restored Republicans to a 53-seat majority in the Senate, and her swift confirmation has been widely praised by her colleagues. However, it remains to be seen whether she will pursue a full six-year term as senator, with some Republicans already beginning to lay the groundwork for potential bids.

A special primary election will be held on August 11th, with a one-week filing period beginning on July 21st. If a runoff is necessary, it will follow two weeks later on August 25th, leaving the nominee two months to campaign before the general election on November 3rd.
