Nolan Wells, an 18‑year‑old student, went missing on July 4 after a boat outing with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Two days later, a National Parks Service ranger discovered his remains on the island’s northwestern tip.
Sheriff John Ledbetter stated that investigators believe Wells had chosen to remain on the island rather than return to the mainland with the group. His mother was notified of his disappearance only after a friend informed her later that evening, prompting a formal report to authorities.
A recording of a call to Sea Tow from the evening of July 4 reveals a vessel taking on water while the crew attempted to manage the situation. The dispatcher heard a crew member describe the bilge pump failure and the boat’s sinking, with seven people aboard, and was asked to arrange towing to a launch point. The boat was not eventually towed.
Former FBI agent Jonathan Gilliam reviewed the audio and concluded it shows no evidence of foul play. He noted the conversation reflected a focus on resolving a water problem rather than any signs of panic or concealment.
The police report indicates that there was no clear water emergency and suggests Wells may have boarded another vessel that night, with his phone not in his possession. The report also notes that authorities had no reason to suspect a deliberate act.
An independent autopsy revealed a red discoloration on Wells’ head, but the cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending further investigation.
Wells was a wide‑receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College and had aspirations to play at the Division 1 level.
