The 16-year-old lifeguard who made headlines after a daring rescue at Santa Cruz Beach on Saturday has spoken out about the harrowing save.
Ryder Williams, the teen hero, described the episode in a statement released by his employer, California State Parks. According to the statement, Williams was making a safety contact when he saw a child lose his footing in ankle-deep water.
Williams immediately radioed for help and ran towards the child. He entered the water and tried to grab the child, but was unable to pull him out due to the turbulent water. A second lifeguard, Aaron Bohnen, entered the water to assist Williams, and together they were able to bring the child to shore.
After assessing the child's condition, Williams and Bohnen provided medical attention until emergency services arrived. The child, who was later identified as 10-year-old Nathaniel, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Nathaniel's father, Sumit Rai, praised Williams' efforts in an interview, saying it was a "remarkable effort" to bring his son back to shore. Rai described the rescue as a "heroic act" that saved his son's life.
Williams' heroics have earned him national attention and praise, including an invitation to the White House to receive a High Civilian Honor. The 10-year-old boy Williams rescued was one of 34 rescues in the Santa Cruz district over the weekend.
California State Parks said that all lifeguard towers in the area were staffed over the weekend, with multiple units on site to provide assistance in case of emergencies.
