Border Czar Tom Homan engaged in a tense exchange with a national television host over recent fatal encounters involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The discussion centered on three separate incidents this month in Texas, Maine, and Florida. In the Texas and Maine cases, suspects attempted to ram ICE agents with vehicles while evading arrest; in Florida, a man fleeing agents ran into oncoming traffic and was struck and killed by a semi-truck.
Homan declined to comment on active investigations but criticized elected officials for undermining ICE authority. He argued that rhetoric from some members of Congress and protesters falsely claiming ICE is not a legitimate law enforcement agency emboldens noncompliance.
“I actually think that emboldens some people to say, I’m not going to comply with ICE,” Homan said, citing four decades in immigration enforcement. He stressed that regardless of views on immigration law, the public should always comply with law enforcement.
The host pressed Homan on whether those killed were unintended targets and questioned if agents were apprehending their intended suspects. She suggested one deceased individual in Houston may not have recognized an unmarked vehicle as law enforcement.
Homan responded that ICE vehicles are equipped with emergency lights and insignia, and that unmarked cars are a standard tactic used by agencies including the NYPD. He maintained that compliance with a stop would have prevented the fatalities.
The conversation turned to body cameras after the host noted their absence complicated verification of events. Homan said all ICE officers would already have cameras if not for a prior government shutdown that delayed funding.
He stated that initial funding was insufficient to cover storage and processing for thousands of records requests. Full deployment is now underway following renewed budget approval, with trainer instruction and nationwide rollout in progress.
Homan endorsed body cameras as a tool to show the public an officer’s perspective during critical incidents. He cited data indicating such footage more often exonerates agents than proves misconduct.
