The Peel Regional Police has made a significant arrest in a rental scheme that allegedly targeted victims on social media platforms. A 27-year-old woman from Brampton has been charged with dozens of counts of fraud in connection with the scheme.
According to police, the alleged scheme involved residences, including basement apartments, being fraudulently advertised for rent on various social media platforms between May 2025 and February. Victims were allegedly tricked into signing rental agreements and sending deposits for first and last month's rent.
However, when victims arrived to move in with their belongings, they found out that the rental units were not available. Police said many of the victims were already in a difficult situation, having moved out of a previous residence.
As a result of the investigation, 17 alleged incidents have been linked to the case, with total financial losses exceeding $60,000. Police said none of the victims received the promised accommodations or had their money returned.
The accused, Savreet Kaur, was arrested on July 13 and charged with obstructing a peace officer and 38 counts of fraud over $5,000. Police are warning the public to exercise caution when searching for rental properties on social media.
Prospective renters are advised to take proactive steps to avoid such scams. This includes visiting the residence being advertised and arranging for a walk-through, asking a trusted friend or family member what they think of the advertisement, and asking the landlord for proof of identification.
