The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines has expressed a desire to collaborate with the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education to increase awareness of intellectual property rights among students.
Director-General Teodoro C. Pascua stated that the agency is looking forward to working with these institutions to increase understanding of intellectual property, even at a younger age. This is essential, he said, in building an intellectual property-centric culture in an economy driven by artificial intelligence.
Pascua emphasized that education initiatives are crucial in helping students develop a culture that values and respects intellectual property. He noted that students should learn not only to absorb knowledge but also to create it, and understand that their ideas have value that can become intellectual property.
The Intellectual Property Office is also looking to strengthen its collaboration with DepEd, CHED, and the Philippine Science High School System, where students are encouraged to develop innovations that may eventually become patentable technologies. The agency aims to go beyond intellectual property registration to commercialization, enabling creators to profit from their work.
A key goal of the Intellectual Property Office is to ensure that protected innovations become commercially viable products, technologies, and solutions that improve people's lives. Pascua highlighted the importance of collaboration among the government, industry, and academia in achieving this objective.
Establishing an intellectual property-centric culture is also expected to promote the use of responsible artificial intelligence and respect the rights of creators, Pascua added.
