Trump urges Graham's sister to launch US Senate bid after she

President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Darline Graham Nordone, the newly appointed U.S. Senator from South Carolina, to run in next month’s special Republican primary.

The endorsement was issued in a social media post on Friday, days after Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham Nordone to temporarily fill the seat left vacant by the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.

Trump described Graham Nordone as a patriot and urged her to enter the race, stating she would honor her brother’s legacy and pledging his complete support should she run.

Graham Nordone was sworn in on Tuesday after her Monday appointment and will serve until the new Congress convenes in January.

She becomes the first female senator from South Carolina and the first sister appointed to the U.S. Senate.

Private discussions indicate Graham Nordone has expressed interest in seeking a full term, with sources noting she has begun conversations about a potential campaign.

The special primary is scheduled for August 11, with candidate filings open from July 21 through July 28.

Several prominent state Republicans, including multiple U.S. representatives and the lieutenant governor, are also considering bids for the seat.
