Maine Democrat Valli Geiger Considered for Senate Bid After Platner Endorsement

Maine state Rep. Valli Geiger has gained national attention after revealing that former Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner encouraged her to consider taking his place on the ballot. Geiger, a Democrat from Rockland, said Platner called her to discuss the possibility of her running if he were to step aside. Although Platner's campaign denied that he had made an endorsement decision, Geiger's name has entered the conversation as a potential replacement nominee.

Geiger, a former nurse and mayor, has a strong background in public service. She has served as a state representative for three terms, representing a coastal district in Maine that includes several islands and townships. Her legislative biography notes that she serves on the Labor Committee and the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee, and has worked on various health-related initiatives throughout her career.

Platner suspended his campaign after allegations of rape were made against him, stating that he could no longer continue as the nominee. Geiger had previously expressed support for Platner and had credited him with helping to secure funding for rape kit tracking in Maine. In a Facebook post, she described the allegations against Platner as "credible" but also expressed her hope that he would lead the political movement his campaign had built.

Geiger is not the only Democrat whose name has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Platner. Several other Democrats, including former gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and former Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah, have also expressed interest or are considering bids. Under Maine law, the Democratic Party has until July 27 to select a new nominee to replace Platner on the general election ballot.

Geiger's connection to Platner predates the current speculation about her potential candidacy. She had previously stood with him and praised his passion for economic populism, and had granted him "an enormous amount of grace" for his behavior during his "dark years" after multiple deployments. Despite this, Geiger has stated that she will not "throw Graham under the bus" and will not "slander or accuse" the woman who made the allegations against him.

The Democratic Party's process for selecting a new nominee is underway, with several candidates already expressing interest. The party must choose a replacement by July 27 in order to meet the state's deadline for the general election ballot. As the process unfolds, Geiger's name remains in the conversation as a potential candidate, although it is unclear whether she will ultimately be selected as the nominee.
