Police investigate possible homicide after fatal head‑on collision claims pet shop owner in her 70s

On Tuesday, a two‑vehicle collision on the B4696 between Lydiard Plain and Braydon Road in Wiltshire claimed the life of Barbara Mullaney, a local pet shop owner in her 70s.

The suspect was first taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries but was later detained for questioning and has now been re‑arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Detective Chief Inspector leading the investigation confirmed that the incident is now being treated as a murder case and that the suspect has been re‑arrested.

Police are reconstructing the events that led to the tragedy and are actively seeking witnesses and dash‑cam footage from the area.

Members of the community have expressed profound grief, with local businesses describing Mullaney as bright, caring, and a central figure in the town.

A spokesperson for a neighboring deli conveyed deep sorrow, referring to her affectionately as “Aunty Barbara.”

The police force has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to prior involvement with the suspect.

It involved an orange Peugeot 107 and a black Vauxhall Astra, which impacted head-on. Barbara, who was driving the Peugeot, died at the scene. A teenage girl travelling in the Vauxhall suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. A 43-year-old man, who was driving the Vauxhall, was initially arrested for driving offences but has since been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after being discharged from hospital. He remains in police custody. Police have also made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to previous involvement with the suspect. Detectives say there is no wider risk to the public but are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has dashcam footage of the black Vauxhall Astra in the Cricklade High Street, Purton High Street or surrounding areas on 30 June, to come forward.
