A heatwave has uncovered the outline of a 17th‑century garden at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, revealing a historic design that has lain hidden for more than three centuries.
The ornamental layout, called the Great Parterre, was created around 1699 for the first Duke of Devonshire. It stretches 473 feet by 227 feet along the estate’s south façade.
Originally planted with flower beds, the area was later covered in grass whose shallow roots dry and scorch quickly in extreme heat, allowing the underlying pattern to emerge when the turf turns brown.

The garden first resurfaced in 2018 and appeared again in 2022 during a heatwave that drove temperatures at the house to a record 38.1 °C.
Weather stations recorded sustained temperatures above 30 °C throughout May, June and July, with sunshine 33 % higher than average and rainfall totaling only 108.2 mm—32 % below the typical amount for the period.
Estate officials observe a broader climate shift toward sunnier springs, extended dry periods, and occasional intense rainfall, a trend evident over recent years.

From early July to mid‑July, southeast England experienced a dry spell lasting 16 days, the longest without rain since 1995.
Gardeners are increasing organic matter in the soil to retain moisture, while hosepipe bans have been imposed across numerous counties to curb water consumption.
Water suppliers have urged customers to limit usage as reservoir levels have fallen to 79 % of capacity, five percentage points below the seasonal average.

The sudden visibility of the historic parterre underscores the growing pressure of climate extremes on heritage landscapes and the need for adaptive management strategies.
