John Edwards, 82, died two weeks after a blaze broke out at his home.
The fire was set by 48‑year‑old Matthew Gorrell, who has a history of arson and was previously convicted for setting a club on fire in 1990.
The court found that Gorrell’s actions on the night of the incident, together with his prior conviction, demonstrated a pattern of dangerous behavior and a fascination with fire.
Judge Michael Chambers KC emphasized the trauma experienced by the victim’s family, describing the impact as “absolutely horrendous.”
Gorrell was also found to have alcohol abuse issues, having consumed alcohol before setting the fatal fire and other nearby bin fires.
The judge imposed a concurrent sentence of up to 12 years for non‑murder offenses, stating that no sentence could undo the loss of life.
Gorrell traveled by train from Chester to Wolverhampton, then by tram to Wednesbury, where he deliberately set multiple fires, though his motives remain unclear.
The judge noted a lack of remorse from Gorrell, calling the attack “evil” and random.
During the trial, it was revealed that John Edwards’ adult sons were staying at the house that night, but the jury was told that Gorrell’s reasons for being in Wednesbury and setting the fire were unknown.
The prosecution highlighted Gorrell’s silence during questioning, indicating that only he could explain his motives.
