Former President Trump publicly criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for supporting identification requirements that would apply to everyday activities, except voting. He called on the U.S. Senate to cancel or postpone its August recess so that the SAVE America Act could be considered before the midterm elections.
During a July 27 press briefing, Mayor Mamdani announced plans for state‑run grocery stores that would offer a 30% discount to shoppers who present identification. The initiative is intended to help residents purchase food, according to the mayor.
She emphasized that the program is designed to prevent resale and to ensure that the discount reaches those in need. The mayor described the system as a “library card‑esque” program that would manage who is buying the groceries.
Trump responded by asserting his support for voter identification and proof of citizenship. He suggested that the mayor’s ID requirement for grocery shopping mirrors the voter ID debate.
The former president also criticized the mayor’s requirement that workers use two forms of identification to receive payment for snow removal during severe winter storms. He argued that such rules could disenfranchise minorities.
When asked about the Senate’s upcoming recess, Trump said the SAVE America Act was of paramount importance and urged lawmakers to remain in session to pass it. He urged senators to stay and act before the midterms.
The Senate is scheduled to begin a three‑week recess at the end of the week and will remain largely out of session for most of October. If the SAVE America Act is not enacted before then, it will not be in effect during the upcoming midterm elections.
