Government Inflation Statistics Under Scrutiny Amid Concerns Over Accuracy

The government's reported 6.4% inflation rate for June has been questioned by a lawmaker, who claims that the figures do not accurately reflect the ongoing rise in prices of essential commodities.

Party-list Rep. Antonio L. Tinio expressed concern that teachers, workers, and other consumers continue to bear the burden of high living costs, despite the government's announcement that inflation has eased.

"Where is this 6.4% inflation the government is talking about?" Tinio asked, "The prices of food, fuel, and other basic goods continue to rise, and every peso earned by teachers and ordinary Filipinos is losing its value and buying less."

He argued that although transport inflation slowed in June, fuel prices remain elevated, with diesel still costing around P70 to P80 per liter, contributing to higher transportation expenses, electricity rates, and food prices.

Tinio also disputed the administration's claim that inflation is easing, noting that core inflation increased to 4.4% from 4.1% while prices of essential commodities remain well above pre-crisis levels.

The lawmaker reiterated his call to increase the Personnel Economic Relief Allowance of teachers and other government employees, saying the allowance has remained at P2,000 since 2009.
