Leonen Warns of AI Caution: In-Depth Insights
Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Marvic M.V.F. Leonen addressed the importance of embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in the legal profession during a conference hosted by the University of the Philippines Women Lawyers' Circle on July 16th. In his speech, Justice Leonen emphasized that AI has the potential to enhance efficiency, yet emphasizes the unwavering significance of independent human judgment and the Judiciary's constitutional responsibilities. According to a Supreme Court statement released on Tuesday, Justice Leonen stated that lawyers showcasing an understanding of AI will undoubtedly surpass those who do not. He emphasized the Judiciary's human-centered augmented intelligence governance framework, which conceptualizes AI as a helpful tool rather than a replacement for judges and lawyers. In his call for legal professionals, Justice Leonen encouraged the careful verification of AI-generated information, protection of client confidentiality, and the continuous development of qualities that technology currently cannot replicate, including empathy, creativity, and moral judgment.
