The tragic death of Durham Regional Police Constable in training Tyrone Magbitang is a devastating loss for the community and the policing service. At just 27 years old, Magbitang was on the cusp of achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer.
Magbitang had been working as a Special Constable in Durham Region since 2023, often in the courts, and was well-respected by his colleagues. "He was an amazing young guy who was well known and well respected," said a former Toronto Police constable. Many officers at Durham Police knew him well, liked him, and respected him, and all were confident that he would be a great cop.
Tragically, Magbitang and a fellow DRPS cadet were involved in a horrific collision with a transport truck on a roadway near Aylmer, Ont. Magbitang was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second officer in training was rushed to hospital with life-threatening wounds, where he remains in critical condition.
DRPS is deeply saddened by this news, with the loss felt throughout the community. "Although his time with our Service was far too short, Tyrone made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him," said the police service. "He will be remembered for his kindness, professionalism, and the tremendous potential he brought to our organization."
The Durham Police Service had been looking forward to welcoming Magbitang and his fellow cadet to the force once they completed their training at the Ontario Police College. Magbitang had been working towards this goal for a long time, taking police foundations at college and pursuing a career in public safety with determination and humility.
The OPP is currently investigating the crash, which is still in its early stages. However, the tragedy of Magbitang's death cannot be mitigated by any investigation or outcome. All that can be done is to mourn this terrible loss, support Magbitang's family and loved ones, and ensure that he is remembered as a dedicated and compassionate individual who wanted to serve the community.
On behalf of the Durham Regional Police Service, a statement was released extending condolences to Magbitang's family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. The police service remains committed to supporting all those affected by this unimaginable loss, and respectfully asks that the privacy of Magbitang's family and those mourning his loss be honoured during this difficult time.
