Police in Hamilton launched a four‑month investigation after a 25% rise in thefts at local Home Depot stores triggered concerns about organized retail crime.
The probe revealed that groups were systematically removing high‑value tools and construction equipment, then selling the items on online marketplaces at prices far below retail, according to investigators.
During the operation, police executed search warrants at a residence and a commercial property, recovering more than $300,000 worth of suspected stolen merchandise, including a 2021 Ram TRX believed to be proceeds of the crime ring.
Officials said the thefts extended beyond the stores, with stolen property being resold online and inflating costs for businesses and consumers. Disrupting the network allowed the recovery of stolen items and prevented further offences.
The Home Depot Asset Protection Team was credited as instrumental in the investigation, helping to identify and track the stolen goods.
In total, 235 charges have been filed against 32 individuals, covering theft under and over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, trafficking of stolen property, and related offenses such as resisting arrest and failing to comply with release orders.
