Unusually high temperatures recorded last week are unlikely to return, but a new wave of warm weather is expected to develop across the United Kingdom. Forecasters report that temperatures in London could reach 31°C by Monday, with conditions gradually warming over the weekend. Minimum temperatures are projected to range between 15°C and 20°C during this period.
Recent heatwaves pushed June temperatures beyond historical records, surpassing the 1976 benchmark by over 1°C. While a brief cooling trend has occurred, southern and eastern regions are now anticipated to experience conditions exceeding 30°C next week. Northern areas, including the northeast of England and eastern Scotland, may see temperatures rise to the mid to high 20s.
Western regions such as Lancashire, the Lake District, western Scotland, and Northern Ireland will remain cooler due to Atlantic influences, with temperatures capped at mid-20s. Marine conditions along northwest European coasts show significant warming, with sea surface temperatures reaching levels typically seen in August. Waters near the English and Welsh coasts are 4-5°C warmer than average in some areas, according to meteorological reports.
Despite rising air temperatures, authorities emphasize risks associated with cold water shock. Marine heatwave conditions do not equate to safe swimming conditions, as coastal waters remain significantly colder than air temperatures. Officials advise the public to prioritize safety by swimming at RNLI lifeguarded beaches, adhering to designated zones marked by red and yellow flags, and contacting emergency services in case of incidents.
