An F‑35B assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed on Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
The mishap occurred around 10 a.m. local time on the flight line of Marine Aircraft Group 11. Emergency responders were dispatched immediately to the site.
The incident has been classified as a Class A mishap. The pilot successfully ejected and was recovered without reported injuries.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the purpose of the flight, whether the aircraft was arriving or departing, or the specific circumstances that led to the crash.
The crash created a large debris field roughly the size of a football field and ignited a brush fire north of State Route 52. The fire was visible from the nearby freeway and prompted calls to the California Highway Patrol.
San Diego Fire‑Rescue assisted with firefighting efforts, while jurisdiction over the overall incident remains with the military.
