President Trump on Saturday expressed strong disagreement with the US Attorney for the District of Columbia over the handling of a vandalism case against former Olympian David Hearn.
The Justice Department on Friday dismissed the case against Hearn, who was indicted by a grand jury on felony charges earlier this month after being accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Reflecting Pool.
Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, was charged with felony destruction of government property and faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
However, in a sudden turn of events, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that the damage to the Lincoln Reflecting Pool was the result of "flawed installation by the contractor" rather than vandalism.
According to Pirro's office, the Department of Interior provided additional documents indicating that the damage was caused by the contractor's rush to complete the project prior to the America 250 celebration.
President Trump strongly disagreed with Pirro's statement, calling the incident a "pure case of vandalism" and pointing to the presence of a large graffiti message on the grass surrounding the Reflecting Pool.
Trump said the material was being cut with a knife or a box cutter, calling on people to "look for yourselves at the vandalism that took place at The Reflecting Pool."
