CBS Sports announced that Tony Romo, its lead NFL analyst, has been placed on leave pending the outcome of a recent DUI arrest in Wisconsin.
The decision follows Romo's arrest on Interstate 43 near Milwaukee after a police officer stopped his vehicle for unsafe passing and lane deviation.
Body‑camera footage released by authorities shows Romo disputing the officer’s request for a field‑sobriety test, asserting he had not consumed alcohol and that he was traveling from a golf course to visit family.
Romo recorded part of the encounter on his phone, but the officer insisted he exit the vehicle and undergo standard testing. Romo declined a breathalyzer and performed atypical balance exercises during the field test.
He was subsequently transported to Milwaukee County Jail, cited for refusing a breath test and for operating a vehicle while under the influence, classified as a first offense. State officials also filed a notice of intent to revoke his driver’s license.
CBS Sports has named former Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt as Romo’s temporary replacement. Watt will join play‑by‑play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on the network’s top NFL broadcast team.
The leave remains in effect until further notice, with no details disclosed about whether Romo requested the suspension or if it was imposed by the network.
