The incident at Wilson Station on Wednesday evening could have had a devastating outcome, had it not been for the swift intervention of Toronto Police. A bus driver was stabbed by a passenger, leaving him with serious non-life-threatening injuries.
According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. when a passenger allegedly attacked the driver with a box cutter. The driver was rushed to hospital, and a man was arrested at the scene. Marvin Alfred, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, stated that the driver was "cut up" and is in "stable condition".
The driver was "minding his own business" when he was approached and attacked, said Alfred. While the wounds are significant, the driver was surrounded by his family at hospital and receiving the support of the senior directors of the union.
TTC sources report that a box cutter was found on the ground at the station, along with an enormous amount of blood. The incident highlights the vulnerability of bus drivers, even when they are inside their protected glass. "The thoughts of the entire organization are with the operator at this difficult time for a full recovery," the TTC said in a statement.
Andrew Powell, a 47-year-old man, is scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on July 9, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., room 105, charged with assault and assault with a weapon. The charges have not been tested in court, but they are heading there.
Toronto Police praised the TTC for their quick response to the incident. "We thank Toronto Police for their quick work in apprehending a suspect," said Stuart Green, TTC spokesperson. "We will continue to share any information and evidence we have as police conduct their investigation."
The TTC has committed to keeping everyone safe while working or riding on their property and continues to work on enhancing public safety. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the safety of bus drivers and passengers alike.
As one TTC employee noted, "This is scary stuff," with the whole lower level of the station filled with police, ambulance, and special constables. The employee described the scene, saying "there was blood all over the ground at the 160 platform."
