The Department of Transportation has announced that the long-delayed Unified Grand Central or Common Station is expected to open by the first quarter of 2028. This development comes after the Economy and Development Council approved a variation order with Light Rail Manila Corp. The project has been plagued by delays, but the department is now working to fast-track its completion.
Transportation Acting Secretary Giovanni Z. Lopez stated that the agency is moving forward with the project after terminating the previous contractor due to delays. The decision to terminate the contract was made in an effort to expedite the project's completion and meet the new target opening date. The department is working to ensure that the project is completed as quickly as possible.
In addition to the Common Station project, the Department of Transportation is also proceeding with the LRT-1 Cavite Extension to Zapote and Niog. The department has stated that it will move forward with the project even if negotiations with the Villar Group fail to come to an agreement. However, the project's progress is contingent upon the government's conditions on the right of way being met.
