Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan paid tribute to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-Ky., during her testimony before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday.
Kagan expressed the court's condolences to Graham's family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting his contributions to the Senate and his role in her 2010 confirmation process.
Graham was one of five Senate Republicans to vote in favor of Kagan's nomination after she was selected by then-President Barack Obama, a notable bipartisan effort at the time.
"Not many Republicans vote for the nominees of somebody selected by a Democratic president, and not many Democrats do the same for someone selected by a Republican president," Kagan said.
Graham's support for Kagan stood out, particularly in the context of increasingly polarized Supreme Court confirmation votes.
Kagan shared a personal anecdote about her conversation with Graham in his office prior to her hearing, highlighting his sense of humor and ability to connect with others.
She recalled a lighthearted exchange with Graham during her confirmation process, where he asked her about her Christmas plans the following year, which many believed sealed her confirmation.
Kagan expressed her gratitude towards Graham for his support and approach to the confirmation process, which she described as serious and respectful.
Graham served 23 years in the Senate and eight years in the House of Representatives before his passing at the age of 71.
His sister, Darline Graham, was appointed to finish the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2027.
