A Peel Regional Police constable was docked 15 days of pay after leaving her duty belt, including a loaded service pistol, in the changing room of a Mississauga clothing store. The incident occurred at the Mango store in Square One on December 16, 2024. The constable, 31, was on a plain clothes detail and had entered the store during her lunch break to try on work‑related pants.
During the try‑on, she removed her duty belt, which contained the firearm, a spare loaded magazine, and handcuffs. While in the changing room, she received a phone call from a fellow officer to provide a translation. She exited the store to conduct the translation in her car, inadvertently leaving her equipment unattended in a public area.
A store employee discovered the missing items and reported them to mall security. Security notified the police, and the constable subsequently contacted mall security and the store to retrieve her gear. Her supervisor arrived on the scene and confirmed the recovery of the equipment.
Internal Affairs arrested the constable on March 11, 2025, charging her with unsafe storage of a firearm. Court documents cited that her conduct undermined public trust in policing, contrary to the prescribed Code of Conduct. She pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court sentenced her to forfeit 120 hours of pay, equivalent to 15 days. The decision underscores the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols for law‑enforcement officers. The case serves as a reminder of the accountability mechanisms within the police force.
