Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has expressed surprise at the club’s recent acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
Santos joined Old Trafford for a reported fee of £48 million, having appeared in 43 matches for Chelsea during the previous season.
Ince questioned the rationale behind investing heavily in a young central midfielder, noting that the club already has emerging talent such as Kobbie Mainoo who could fill that role.
He praised the arrival of Youri Tielemans, describing him as a strong, versatile player who can operate in a role similar to that of Bruno Fernandes.
Ince also highlighted Mainoo’s potential, citing his composure, stamina and ball‑holding abilities as qualities that could serve United’s midfield needs.
Manchester United’s manager, Michael Carrick, has been tasked with strengthening the squad after the departure of Casemiro and the injury of Manuel Ugarte.
Ince urged the club to retain Marcus Rashford, arguing that the winger’s versatility and goal‑scoring ability would be valuable assets for the team.
He emphasized Rashford’s talent and the importance of keeping him happy to ensure continued performance on the pitch.
Carrick guided the team to a third‑place finish in the Premier League last season and secured qualification for the Champions League.
The club will begin its 2026‑27 Premier League campaign on August 22 against Hull City.
