Immigration Policy: Labour Seeks to Outpace Reform's Conservative

British politics has become mired in a cycle of divisive rhetoric, with politicians competing to prove their anti-immigration credentials. The latest example of this unfortunate trend is a row between Labour minister Jo White and Reform's Robert Jenrick over who is more committed to stopping migrants from entering the country.

White was at pains to point out that she was committed to stopping the boats, while Jenrick posted a doctored clip in an apparent attempt to smear her. He later deleted the post after White corrected him, but not before facing calls to apologize.

Instead of simply demanding that Jenrick apologize, we should be asking why White is apparently hell-bent on stopping migrants from entering the country. Successive governments and politicians of all stripes have tried to scapegoat migrants, and it's impossible to separate that rhetoric from the far-right hate and violence on our streets.

Nearly 12,000 migrants have made the crossing to the UK this year, around 37% fewer than in the same period in 2025. My own family's experience with immigration serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that migrant communities have had on modern Britain. My parents came to this country from Bangladesh with hope, hard work, and a belief in the opportunities that it offered. They worked, paid taxes, raised children, and contributed to the community, just like countless migrant families before and since.

It's time to reject the divisive politics that have come to define our country. The Green Party is unafraid to say that immigration has enriched our country economically, culturally, socially, and in every way. Our diversity is our strength.

We face soaring housing costs, crumbling public services, and stagnant wages, but these problems were not caused by migrant workers. They were caused by years of political choices that failed to invest in our communities. The Green Party is working to change that, with a focus on creating safe and managed legal routes for refugees, ending the hostile environment, and investing in public services and affordable homes.

Our politics is one of hope, not division. We celebrate our country and our communities in all their diversity, and we believe that welcoming people and looking after those who need our help is what makes Britain great.

We will always stand in solidarity with migrant communities, refugees, and people seeking sanctuary. We will always defend the principle that every person deserves dignity, whatever their place of birth.

The question now is whether the Labour Party will continue down the same path of anti-immigrant rhetoric, or whether they will choose a different path. The Green Party offers a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and compassionate Britain, and we will continue to stand up for the values of solidarity, dignity, and hope.
