Toronto Mayoral Hopeful Condemns Deadly Violence

A Toronto mayoral candidate has spoken out against the response to a recent mass shooting in the city, criticizing officials for downplaying the severity of the incident. Brad Bradford expressed his disappointment with the comments made by some officials in the aftermath of the deadly violence, which occurred on Saturday night at the Salsa on St. Clair festival.

Bradford was specifically referring to remarks made by Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo, who stated that the city is "one of the safest cities in the world" just minutes after the shooting. The incident resulted in the deaths of two men, 20-year-old Cesar Vinces and 25-year-old Shaquan Quashie, and left five people hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Bradford termed the deputy chief's comments as "tone deaf" and argued that they sent the wrong message to the public.

The mayoral candidate emphasized the need for leadership that acknowledges the fear and insecurity felt by the public, rather than simply presenting statistics. He noted that while shootings in Toronto may be down 26% compared to this time last year, this does little to comfort those who have lost loved ones or been injured in violent incidents. Bradford stressed that what matters most is how people feel and what can be done to restore their sense of safety and security.

Bradford's comments were echoed by Aldo Di Felice, president of TLN Media Group Inc., one of the organizers of the Salsa on St. Clair festival. Di Felice released a statement saying that unless city officials provide concrete commitments to enhance policing and security, his organization will discontinue its involvement in the festival. He emphasized the need for city officials to take the community's calls for improved safety seriously and provide meaningful solutions.

The recent violence in Toronto has been a major concern for residents, with more than a dozen people shot over the weekend and three fatalities. Bradford argued that the focus should be on addressing the root causes of violence and ensuring public safety, rather than simply presenting statistics. He emphasized that people's perceptions of safety are not based on numbers, but on their personal experiences and feelings of security.

The city's homicide count continues to rise, with 18 victims so far this year. The most recent incident occurred on Friday night in North York, where a triple shooting resulted in one death and two serious injuries. As the city grapples with the aftermath of these incidents, officials are under pressure to provide effective solutions to address the violence and restore public confidence in their ability to keep citizens safe.
