The Philippine men’s football team faces a challenging situation in their bid to reach the semifinals of the Asean Championship-Hyundai Cup.
A 0-1 loss to Thailand on Tuesday night at the New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac, has left the team with three points, earned from one win and two losses, heading into their final match against Malaysia.
The stakes are high, as the Philippines will need to beat Malaysia by five goals in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to have a chance at advancing to the Final Four via a tiebreaker. Alternatively, they are relying on Myanmar to lose to Thailand, which would leave the Philippines with a slim hope of qualification.
Coach Carles Cuadrat acknowledged the team's precarious position, stating that their objective against Thailand was to secure at least one point through a draw, which would have given them a total of seven points and left the door open for qualification against Malaysia.
However, the situation has become more complicated, with the team now facing a difficult task to catch up. The Philippines' goal difference of -1 after two matches puts them at a disadvantage compared to Malaysia's +3 and Myanmar's +7.
