Former Vice President Kamala Harris welcomed a slate of progressive proposals she did not highlight during her 2024 presidential campaign, including a push to expand the Supreme Court, a call to abolish the Electoral College, and a suggestion that Puerto Rico seek statehood.
Speaking at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Harris urged a serious conversation about revisiting the Electoral College, noting the controversy such a proposal would generate.
In the 2024 election, she lost both the Electoral College and the popular vote to the incumbent president.
Harris also expressed support for expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices, aligning the number of justices with the current count of district courts.
Although she has advocated for term limits for Supreme Court justices, the expansion idea was absent from her 2024 platform.
She extended her statehood discussion to Puerto Rico, moving beyond her earlier focus on Washington, D.C. statehood.
Harris clarified that she has not yet decided whether to run for president in 2028, stating that her primary focus remains on the upcoming midterm elections.
Her remarks arrive amid speculation that she may become the leading candidate for the party’s 2028 nomination.
During the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention, she left the possibility of a 2028 run open, indicating she would keep supporters informed.
In recent months, Harris has engaged with progressive leaders, including meetings with a mayor and a congresswoman at a Black women’s empowerment summit.
These interactions signal her continued outreach to influential figures within the party’s progressive wing as she considers a potential 2028 campaign.
