US Customs Agents Seize $3.7 Million in Cocaine Hidden as Cucumber Shipment

US Customs Agents Seize $3.7 Million in Cocaine Hidden as Cucumber Shipment

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents made a significant narcotics seizure last Wednesday, intercepting over $3.7 million worth of cocaine hidden in a shipment of cucumbers.

At the Pharr International Bridge near the southernmost point of Texas, CBP agents discovered 112 packages in a tractor-trailer after a canine inspection and a subsequent nonintrusive imaging system scan revealed anomalies in the vehicle.

The seized load, weighing 278.88 pounds, has an estimated street value of $3,723,654, according to the agency. This interception highlights the ongoing challenge of smuggling along the U.S. border, despite record-low illegal border crossings.

According to Port Director Carols Rodriguez, who manages the Hidalgo Port of Entry, maintaining high levels of scrutiny is crucial to detecting and deterring smugglers. "This interception is a powerful reminder that our CBP officers are on duty 24/7, employing every resource to detect and deter those who attempt to exploit our borders," Rodriguez stated.

CBP has seen a significant decline in border crossings since the end of 2024, from over 144,000 encounters in December to just 10,000 in April. However, the agency has also made several high-profile smuggling attempts, including a February incident where a truckload of "roses" concealed over 515 pounds of cocaine.

Just last month, on April 2, CBP seized 298 pounds of cocaine worth approximately $2.6 million in a commercial truck allegedly carrying carrots. The smuggling efforts have not been limited to drugs, with CBP also preventing a car carrying a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, 16 AK rifles, and other weapon parts from crossing the border.

The threat of illicit narcotics remains constant, but CBP remains vigilant, emphasizing the importance of its agents' tireless efforts to protect the border and prevent smuggling attempts.
