Joe Locke has described the intimate scenes in the upcoming Heartstopper finale as feeling beautiful, as he and Kit Connor prepare to conclude their time with the franchise.
The queer romance series will come to a close on 17 July with the release of a feature-length finale film. The release aligns with the publication of the final Heartstopper graphic novel earlier this month.
The film follows characters Nick and Charlie as they navigate the challenges of a long-distance relationship when Nick leaves for university. Intimate scenes featured in the finale represent a natural progression of the young couple’s love story.
Both Locke and Connor served as executive producers on the final installment. Locke noted that the intimacy depicted goes further than previous seasons but was handled with care and sensitivity during production.
Connor emphasized that actors participating in intimate scenes must have autonomy, security, and safety on set. He credited the production’s intimacy coordinator and creative team for fostering a comfortable environment.
Locke added that intimacy in the series has consistently been necessary and tasteful, which he considers essential to responsible storytelling.
The finale also introduces changes to the cast. Anna Maxwell Martin takes over the role of Nick’s mother, replacing Olivia Colman.
The Heartstopper finale premieres on the streaming platform on 17 July.
