An LGBTQ youth organization based in Framingham, Massachusetts, has faced intense scrutiny following the release of a marketing advertisement that established different payment rates based on race.
The nonprofit, OUT MetroWest Inc., organized a photoshoot intended for social media, fundraising, and marketing campaigns. The event sought to recruit 20 LGBTQ+ youth between the ages of pre-K and 29.
The initial advertisement specified that white participants would receive $20 for their involvement. In contrast, participants identified as people of color would receive $25, a decision the organization stated was part of a commitment to racial equity.
The policy sparked significant backlash online, drawing criticism regarding discriminatory pay practices. Following the public outcry and discussions regarding the legality of the pay structure, the organization adjusted its compensation model.
The revised compensation plan set a flat fee of $20 for all participants. The organization added a provision for a potential $5 bonus for images that receive premium placement in marketing materials.
OUT MetroWest Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building communities where LGBTQ youth can thrive through social, educational, and supportive programming.
