Representative Cory Mills has said that a criminal investigation is being conducted by the Justice Department against him, a claim he characterizes as a politically motivated attack ahead of Florida’s upcoming Republican primary.
Mills maintains that he has not received any formal notice from the DOJ or FBI regarding a probe, and he denies that either agency has reached out to him about potential investigations.
The allegations that the DOJ is investigating him reportedly relate to his finances, though no specific details have been disclosed.
The timing of the claims, just weeks before the primary, has led Mills to suggest that they originate from political opponents seeking to damage his reelection bid.
Three candidates are vying for the open seat in Florida’s 7th Congressional District: former newscaster Ryan Elijah, former Defense Department official Michael Johnson, and former business executive Sarah Ulrich, with Elijah positioned as the primary challenger.
In addition to the DOJ claim, a separate inquiry by the House Ethics Committee is examining accusations of sexual misconduct, dating violence, and violations of campaign finance rules against Mills.
Mills was first elected to the House in 2022 and re-elected in 2024. He currently serves on the Armed Services and Intelligence committees and is campaigning for a third term.
The Republican primary is scheduled for August 18.
