Republican Wins Arizona Toss‑up GOP Primary Amid Vulnerability

Rep. Juan Ciscomani secured the Republican nomination in a key Arizona district that both parties view as pivotal for control of the House.

The southeastern district, which includes Tucson’s suburbs and stretches to the U.S.–Mexico border, has become one of the nation’s most closely watched races after a presidential candidate won the seat by less than one percentage point in the most recent election.

Marine veteran and political consultant JoAnna Mendoza ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, positioning herself as a fresh challenger for the November ballot.

Mendoza’s campaign drew attention after her official Instagram account followed several adult‑content creators, including a transgender activist known for explicit posts. She also faced renewed scrutiny for remarks made in 2020, when she suggested decriminalizing prostitution to improve access to health and social services for vulnerable populations.

A Republican spokesperson criticized the candidate, describing her as a risk for voters. Democratic officials, however, have highlighted her as a strong recruit and added her to a program aimed at flipping competitive seats.

Political analysts categorize the contest as a toss‑up, reflecting the district’s narrow partisan balance.

Ciscomani, a moderate Republican seeking a third term, emphasizes his bipartisan record, citing his work with a former governor and his membership in centrist congressional caucuses.

He previously won the seat in 2022, becoming the first naturalized Mexican citizen elected to Congress, and defeated former state senator Kirsten Engel by a margin of more than three points in a 2024 rematch.
