Judicial Watch Publishes Thousands of Body-Camera Footage Clips from January 6 Protest in Washington D.C.

The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department has released over 1,000 hours of body-worn camera footage from the January 6, 2021 protests at the US Capitol. The footage consists of 1,630 videos, a significant step towards transparency in the events surrounding the day.

The release of the footage is a result of a court ruling in an April 2026 Freedom of Information Act case. The ruling was a victory for Judicial Watch, an organization that had been pursuing the release of the footage for years.

Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit in June 2024 after the DC Police denied an August 2021 request for all body-worn camera footage recorded by police officers responding to the January 6, 2021, events at and around the U.S. Capitol. The court ultimately ruled that the DC Police could not broadly blur and censor the footage, holding that any privacy interests were minimal and outweighed by the overwhelming public interest in disclosure.

The release of the footage comes nearly five years after January 6, a time when the American people are still fighting in court to uncover the truth about what the government's own cameras recorded that day. The DC Police had fought hard to keep the footage hidden from the public, and it remains to be seen what information will be uncovered in the 1,630 videos.

While some may expect the mainstream media to delve into the footage, it remains uncertain whether they will do so. Their narrative on January 6 was formed years ago, and it is unclear if they will be willing to re-examine the events of that day.

The release of the footage marks an important step towards transparency and accountability. The public now has access to over 1,000 hours of footage, and it is up to them to scrutinize the information and uncover the truth about January 6.
