A 46-year-old man from El Salvador has been charged with rape and abduction in Northern Virginia, following a series of events that have sparked concerns about public safety and immigration policies.
Juan Arevalo Mendez was arrested on June 30 in Prince William County on charges related to an alleged attack in September 2025. According to authorities, Mendez is a twice-deported individual with a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1998, which includes convictions for assault, aggravated assault, and drug possession.
The Department of Homeland Security has lodged a detainer with Fairfax County officials, requesting that Mendez be transferred into federal custody. This move is part of a broader effort to address concerns about public safety and immigration policies in the state.
The case has drawn attention to recent Virginia cases involving immigrants accused or convicted of violent crimes. Authorities have pointed to several recent incidents, including a case in Annandale where a Nicaraguan national was charged with abduction with intent to defile, and a case in Woodbridge where a Mexican national was charged with molesting a 5-year-old girl.
The Department of Homeland Security has also highlighted the arrests of several other individuals with immigration-related charges, including a Guatemalan national charged with murdering his 3-month-old daughter in Fairfax County, and another Guatemalan national charged with second-degree murder in Bailey's Crossroads.
The incident has sparked a debate about immigration policies and public safety in the state, with some officials calling for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.
Authorities are urging officials to honor the ICE detainer and transfer Mendez into federal custody, citing his lengthy criminal history and the need to ensure public safety.
