Thomas Tuchel has faced significant criticism following England’s defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.
After taking the lead in the second half, England retreated defensively, with Tuchel introducing substitutions that backfired as Argentina scored twice to reach the final.
Wayne Rooney led the post-match condemnation, arguing that Tuchel’s tactical changes caused the squad to lose belief. Some players reportedly voiced frustration over the approach that led to elimination.
Despite the disappointing campaign, the Football Association intends to retain Tuchel, who signed a new contract shortly before the tournament began.
With limited viable alternatives available, Rooney supports the decision to keep Tuchel, expressing confidence that the coach will learn from his errors.
Rooney acknowledged that if Pep Guardiola, currently without a club after leaving Manchester City, expressed interest in the role, England should act. He described Guardiola as a top-class manager capable of improving from mistakes.
However, Rooney cautioned that Guardiola lacks World Cup experience, noting the tournament’s unique environment differs from club football. He pointed to similar concerns with previous appointments.
Guardiola is regarded as a leading candidate to succeed Tuchel should a change occur, ahead of other names such as Eddie Howe.
