An incident in Houston, Texas, has resulted in the fatal shooting of a Mexican citizen who allegedly attempted to ram U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during an operation. The agency reported the incident on Tuesday.
According to ICE, officers were attempting a traffic stop for the individual at around 6:50 a.m. when he tried to evade the agents. The individual allegedly "weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer, resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense." The individual was struck and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The FBI is currently investigating the shooting. This incident highlights the growing threats faced by ICE officers, who have seen a significant increase in assaults, vehicular attacks, and death threats in recent times.
A second incident occurred on July 1, when an ICE agent opened fire on an illegal immigrant who allegedly tried to ram a vehicle into authorities. The officers were attempting to take the individual into custody when he allegedly tried running into an officer and drove the wrong way on a one-way street before crashing into a civilian vehicle. Fortunately, no one appeared to be injured in this incident, and the individual remains at large.
ICE has reported a substantial increase in threats against their officers, with a more than 1,300% increase in assaults, a 3,300% increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000% increase in death threats. These incidents underscore the dangers faced by law enforcement officers as they carry out their duties.
