Mad Max actor Kjell Nilsson dies at 76 after prolonged health battle

Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish actor best known for portraying Lord Humungus in the 1981 action film Mad Max 2, died at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 2 in Queensland after several years of health struggles.

Nilsson’s performance as the gang leader in Mad Max 2 earned critical acclaim and secured his place as a cult‑film icon. His screen credits also include roles in The Pirate Movie (1982), the television movie Man of Letters (1984), and a supporting part in The Edge of Power (1987).

Born in Gothenburg, Nilsson moved to Australia in 1980 to train for the Moscow Olympics as a weight‑lifting athlete. While in Australia he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he later married in Sweden; she persuaded him to stay Down Under and pursue a career in film.

In 2022 Nilsson was diagnosed with end‑stage kidney disease and began dialysis three times a week. After four and a half years of treatment he chose to discontinue dialysis, seeking control over his pain and quality of life.

A family statement noted that his final days were marked by gratitude, peace, and acceptance, and that he passed away on his own terms. The statement also highlighted his resilience, noting that he celebrated four additional Christmases beyond the prognosis given by medical professionals.

Colleagues remembered Nilsson as a wonderful person who inspired many as a weight‑training coach and remained deeply connected to the Mad Max fan community. Fans recalled his vibrant personality, unwavering conviction, and magnetic screen presence.
